Check soil and plants before watering. Water the root zone as needed instead of giving every plant the same amount on a calendar. New plantings may need different care from established plants.
Appropriate mulch can reduce evaporation and suppress weeds. Remove weeds first and keep mulch away from stems and trunks. Material and depth depend on planting and soil conditions.
Inspect leaves, stems and soil regularly. Gloves can help with routine handling, but are not protection against every thorn or chemical. Use task-appropriate protection and follow product instructions.
