Watering houseplants: start with the roots

Check the growing mix before watering, rather than following a fixed calendar. Species have different moisture needs; light, temperature and pot size affect how quickly the mix dries.

Your first balcony garden: light, wind and weight

Common questions

Good questions grow better gardens.

Can I mix perlite and vermiculite?

Yes. Perlite improves airflow while vermiculite holds moisture. For many seed-starting mixes, equal parts of each work well.

Does expanded clay change soil pH?

Quality expanded clay is stable and pH-neutral. Rinse it before use to remove transport dust.

How much hydrogel should I use?

A little goes a long way. Always follow the dosage on the pack; too much can lift soil as crystals expand.

Which product is best for houseplants?

It depends on the plant and your watering habits. Perlite can aerate an appropriate mix; expanded clay can serve as a hydroponic medium. A pebble layer does not replace drainage holes.
