Assess the site
Observe sun hours and wind exposure. South-facing balconies need heat-tolerant plants and frequent moisture checks; shaded ones suit foliage plants and herbs that tolerate less light.
Mind the weight
Wet mix, water and containers are heavy. Confirm allowable load with the building manager. Expanded clay is lighter than gravel for drainage layers.
Reduce watering stress
Larger containers dry more slowly. Hydrogel can hold extra water in the mix when dosed according to the label, but it never replaces regular watering.
