Pick containers with drainage holes and room for mature roots. Raise them on feet so water can escape and does not stain the surface.
Large containers stay planted for years. A structured mix with perlite resists compaction; a drainage layer of expanded clay helps the base stay free of standing water.
Water deeply and check moisture in warm or windy weather. A mulch layer on the surface reduces evaporation.
