Water retention: keeping moisture where roots need it

Containers dry faster than garden beds. Water-retaining materials can even out moisture between waterings when they are used in the right dose.

Water retention: keeping moisture where roots need it

Core guide

Hydrogel

Hydrogel absorbs water and releases it gradually. Mix it in dry before planting and follow the dosage on the pack; overdosing can make the mix too wet.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite holds water and nutrients while staying loose. It suits seed starting and plants that like even moisture.

Mulch and shade

A surface mulch and some shade for the containers reduce evaporation on hot days.

Frequently asked questions

Is hydrogel suitable for every plant?

No. Plants that prefer dry conditions, such as succulents, usually do not benefit. Check plant needs first.

Can I add hydrogel to an existing pot?

It works best mixed through the mix at planting or repotting, not sprinkled on the surface.

What is the difference between vermiculite and perlite?

Vermiculite retains water; perlite mainly adds air. Many mixes use both.
